Day of Reckoning Fight Preview

Joshua vs. Wallin

The Matchup

The Day of Reckoning is coming, Anthony Joshua and Otto Wallin collide on December 23rd and the bout will set the winner up for what could be a huge 2024. There’s. No world titles are at stake in this heavyweight clash but with Joshua eyeing up a battle with Deontay Wilder next year, he can only secure that monstrous clash by getting past the durable Swede.

Joshua’s Comeback Trail

Joshua enters the bout on the back of two decent wins following his terrific world title series against Oleksandr Usyk. The 2012 Olympic gold medallist is in rebuild mode and with Derrick James and Ben Davison handling his training duties now, it’s a new approach from the Brit as he looks to secure victory.

Since losing to Usyk in back-to-back fights, Joshua has responded with wins against Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius, but does he have it in him to beat the top fighters in the division? Wallin is an upgrade on Joshua’s previous foes this year, and if Joshua can send an emphatic message by beating Wallin handily, it’ll set him up well for a prosperous 2024.

Wallin’s Opportunity

For Otto Wallin, this is a huge opportunity to gatecrash the heavyweight rankings at the business end and land himself another big fight in the future. Wallin has only tasted defeat once and that came at the hands of Tyson Fury in 2019 when he pushed the Englishman close before losing an entertaining fight on points.

Wallin has won every fight since the Fury contest, and he heads into the Joshua bout full of confidence. Is Wallin facing Joshua at the right time? Or will the step up in class be too much meaning that Wallin falls short against the resurgent AJ? All will be revealed when the first bell sounds on December 23rd.

For Wallin, the Day of Reckoning is not just another fight; it’s a career-defining moment that could catapult him into the heavyweight elite.

Wilder vs. Parker

High Stakes Contest

A battle of former world champions takes place on December 23rd as Deontay Wilder and Joseph Parker go at it with the loser’s world title aspirations set to be over. So much is at stake in this fascinating contest and the winner could likely head into 2024 and land another huge fight, potentially against Anthony Joshua.

Parker’s Redemption Quest

With the bulk of Deontay Wilder’s recent activity focusing on Tyson Fury, the American goes in with a training partner of the current WBC champion as Parker is a frequent attendee of many of Fury’s fight camps. The New Zealander is in decent form heading into the clash but his stoppage loss to Joe Joyce in 2022 remains a fresh memory.

Parker’s defeat against Joyce was intended to spell the end of Parker’s run as a top-level heavyweight but he has a great opportunity to remind people of his credentials when he faces Wilder this month. It’s five years since Parker held a world title but he might be able to secure himself one last shot if he gets past Wilder.

Wilder’s Return

The former WBC champion has not fought since October 2022 and even then, he only managed one round of action as he stopped Robert Helenius in the opening session. The victory provided everyone with a harsh reminder of the power that Wilder possesses and with Parker brutally halted by Joyce last year, one must believe that Wilder can hurt him.

Standing up to Wilder’s onslaughts could be the biggest challenge that Parker ever faces but if he can stand up to those attacks, he’ll be confident he can spring an upset. Wilder and Joshua are finally sharing a bill with the hope that they go against each other next year, but both men will have to be at their best if they’re to finally get it on in 2024.
