Katie Taylor’s chance at redemption Vs Chantelle Cameron

Katie Taylor gets an opportunity to avenge the first loss of her career when she rematches the undefeated Chantelle Cameron at the first attempt.

Chantelle Cameron vs. Katie Taylor: The Rematch Set for 25th November

On 25th November, Taylor (22-1, 6 KO) faces Cameron (18-0, 8 KO) for the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC and WBO super-lightweight titles in the 3Arena in Dublin.

Back in May, Taylor fell short in her unprecedented quest to become a two-weight undisputed champion, losing a decision to Cameron in her hometown of Dublin.

A Must-Win Scenario for Katie Taylor

Despite still being an undisputed champion at lightweight, Taylor has refused to play down the importance of this rematch to her career.

“I’m just excited to be back in camp and to rectify things.

I’m very, very aware that this is a must-win fight. I’m grateful, not every fighter has this opportunity.

I’ve been here before, at the elite amateur level where I suffered a defeat. I know how to make the necessary adjustments; I know how to come back strong.”

At 37 years of age, Taylor has been emphatic in her response to any suggestion she considered retirement following her first professional loss.

“No. It would have been a terrible way to bow out. I love these kinds of fights, love the pressure situations. For sure, losses are always very tough to take. I am a competitor who loves to win. I train to win so a loss is never easy but I am just so grateful I have another chance in this rematch.

I’ll just take it one fight at a time. My goal now is to get the rematch on with Chantelle and turn the last disappointment into a great victory. We’ll see what happens after that, I’m feeling very fit and fresh.”

“A lot of people, I think, are doubting me as well, so I actually love these fights when people are actually doubting me. I think this could be one of the greatest nights of my career.”

Chantelle Cameron’s Approach to the Rematch

Speaking at the press conference, Cameron was in bullish mood citing that she was affected by the big stage in their first fight and will be approaching the rematch in a more aggressive fashion.

“I can’t be hurt. I can walk Katie down.”

“I’m definitely expecting a better Katie Taylor. I’ve got to be spiteful and go back to the old days when I was a bit more aggressive. The atmosphere was new to me, I’ve never boxed on that big a stage before. I can put that to bed as well and just focus on the fight.

I showed too much respect. Didn’t feel like I had that spite in me. I am better when I’ve got a bit of beef between my teeth, and I have that now because I know I’ve got a massive job on my hands. I’m trying to win in better fashion.”

What’s at Stake in Chantelle Cameron vs. Katie Taylor?

It goes without saying that with five belts and undisputed status on the line, it’s a legacy-defining contest for both fighters. The opportunity for Taylor to become two-weight undisputed champion, and redemption for her only loss gives the Irish star some added impetus.

Unfinished History: Taylor vs. Cameron

However, there is unfinished history between the two fighters means this is more than just a rematch and there is a rivalry to settle. Despite being undefeated in her professional career, Cameron lost to Taylor in 2011 in the semi-finals of the EU Championships in Katowice.

With the head-to-head between the pair currently at 1-1, this is a rubber match with all the gold on the line.
